another gadget

SATURDAY 2/29/2020 8:49 AM--I think Dianne will be on her way before 10 AM...shortly thereafter I'll nervously work with the digital recorder...I'm TRYING to be patient, really I am...I'm just gonna try a voice test,  maybe a minute or so of me rambling on about nothing...a surprise--the recorder can use the tripod I bought for my phone!
10:20 AM--played around with The ZOOM recorder...I was recording my voice when the clock rang at the top of the hour...the clock is about six feet away and the ZOOM picked it up quite well...I'm gonna do another test later, me and my acoustic, possibly in the living room...might even run a test from my bedroom just to hear the difference, assuming there will be one...
10:54 AM--the longer I play with the ZOOM, the more I learn...I'll take the Quick Guide to the gig hopefully, just in case...maybe on Monday I can figure out how to export a file to my laptop, specifically my iTunes Library...I THINK I need an Android cable, and I have at least one...I downloaded the complete manual, all 71 pages of it...
SUNDAY 3/1/2020 1:45 AM – the gig is over, we pretty much sucked for most of the night, except for Arch… I certainly sucked for most of the night, and Rick REALLY sucked...my first two attempts to record the band failed completely and the one recording that worked was not loud enough--I didn't have the recording level set high enough...
9:54 AM--at the gig, during a break, I was discussing recording on a laptop with Arch, our bass player for the night...he said I can record stuff on Audacity...it's NOT (IMO) so simple a child could do it, but an adult-with a lot of patience (uh oh) just might be able to get something accomplished...I THINK I can somehow plug my keyboard into the laptop...and it may even be possible to do all or most of the recording on the ZOOM doo-hickey and THEN feed it into Audacity...The ZOOM apparently can do a LOT more than it looks like it can do...I'll hopefully get seriously started tomorrow...do a single guitar, three part harmony thing...should probably get an AC adapter for the ZOOM...Litz should have it, they had the doo-hickey in the first place...overdubbing on the ZOOM seems deceptively easy--there must be more to it than what manual says...I'm anxious to get started (naturally) but I'm gonna try TRY to be patient...probably just do dialog overdubbing first...THAT should be interesting...
The overdubbing concept is do-able! it's important to keep the recording levels the same for each layer...I haven't quite decided what the best rec level is yet, but hopefully I will soon...again., I'm trying to be patient, but it ain't easy...I could possibly put down a guitar part now (the chorus to SUGAR MTN perhaps) and lay down the vocals later, as in tomorrow...then (I think) you feed it into Audacity then add the effects (reverb, etc.) there...we'll see...
I may have hit a major snag – – I think I just wiped Audacity off of my computer trying to get the latest version of it…I REALLY hope I’m wrong...I WANNA wait until tomorrow to find out for certain, but I probably won’t...
